Useless August 21, 2008

I had a "fork" thermometer that worked well but decided I'd like this one because it has a probe and could stay in the meat while it grilled. Or, of course, I could poke it from time to time to check the temperature. It is far from accurate. I tried it with a steak and the steak was overdone. I tried it again and the same problem. I checked it and found it measures boiling water at 196 degrees. But the error is not linear - in other words, I can't simply say it's off by 16 degrees. That means experimenting to find what the real temperature is when it tells me it's 145 degrees. I don't think I should have to do that with a thermometer I bought and which says it is "acu-rite." Unless, of course, acu-rite wants to send me the steaks to experiment with.

Stopped working after third use November 5, 2009

I can't speak to the accuracy that others have commented on, however I am rather unhappy that the device stopped working after I used it for the third time. It is also worth noting that the device is not the most intuitive to use - however to be fair, I do not have many points of comparison.

This thing worked for six grillings. Now all the temperature shows is "Low" and "High". I've tried everything and can't get a digital temperature readout. I think the wire to the probe must have malfunctioned. I put a new battery in it, but I'm going to take it out before I throw the dang thing in the garbage. I'm going to get a remote thermometer and it won't be Acurite.

I bought the l5cw040tx model a couple years ago. I like that is DOESN'T have all the preset meat categories as those are for beginners. Read more
